Enrollment in all teacher education programs follows the guidelines for "Admission to Teacher Education Programs" found in this catalog. Applicants who do not yet meet all admissions criteria should consult with the department.
The purpose of this degree program is to prepare teachers intellectually and pragmatically to be effective in urban classrooms and to become leaders in urban school districts. Students seeking entrance into the program who have not had experience in urban settings will be required to work closely with at least one urban educator during their degree program in order to experience the urban classroom first-hand.
This Master of Science in Urban Education degree program will provide the academic requirements for a NYS Professional Certificate for post-baccalaureate students through advanced study in the theory and pedagogy of urban education and further study in the content or concentration field required for professional certification.
Candidates should consult the Teacher Certification website for current seminars and workshops.
Applicants are required to have a minimum undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0. Applicants whose entering GPA is less than a 3.0 GPA but above a 2.5 will be subject to additional admission review and potential pre-major coursework; students are encouraged to check with the Department that represents the content area they desire to pursue.
Additional admissions requirements:
Evidence of a completed undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
Evidence of current or pending Teaching Certification at the initial level. Recent graduates or students who are completing their undergraduate programs at the time of application should list their anticipated date of certification on the admission application.
A word-processed statement addressing the following:
a. Professional goals for the urban master’s program.
b. Related professional experiences.
The statement will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
1. Organization
2. Conventions of language
3. Content
Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s academic background and teaching effectiveness. This letter should provide evidence of applicant’s understanding and commitment to working in an urban setting as well as their professionalism and academic ability.
Applicants will be required to participate in a phone or face-to-face interview.
